BBC Radio 1Xtra from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) is a digital radio station in the UK. The station is aimed at a young black audience and plays a mix of contemporary R&B, hip hop, grime, soul and reggae.
BBC Radio 1Xtra was launched on 16 August 2002 as a companion station to BBC Radio 1. The station was initially broadcast on digital radio but was later made available on DAB radio and online. The first song played on 1Xtra was a special track produced by Dj Skitz and Rodney P. The station plays a mix of contemporary R&B, hip hop, grime, soul and reggae. The station's target demographic is young black adults. 1Xtra has featured several high-profile presenters and DJs over the years, including DJ Semtex, Trevor Nelson, Charlie Sloth, Ace and Vis. In 2019, an announcement was made that BBC Radio 1Xtra would be merged with BBC Radio 1, with the merged station broadcasting on digital and online radio. The merger took effect on 7 September 2019.
